Come si usa
How to use it
Frame your scene and mount CPL and GND filters if you use them. Meter the correct exposure: that reading is your starting point. Add the ND filter, enter the base time in the calculator, press Calculate. Start the timer the moment you open the shutter in Bulb mode.
Se usi già CPL e GND
If you already have CPL and GND mounted
Misura l'esposizione con CPL e GND già davanti all'obiettivo.

The large number is the total shutter speed to set. If it exceeds 30 seconds use Bulb mode with a remote release to avoid vibration.
I filtri ND, GND e CPL: differenze
ND, GND and CPL filters. the differences
ND1000 = 10 stop = 1/125s diventa ~8 secondi.
- GND (Graduated ND): Scuro in alto, trasparente in basso. Bilancia cielo brillante e primo piano scuro.
- ND (Neutral Density): Reduces light evenly across the whole frame. Each stop doubles the shutter speed. ND1000 = 10 stops = 1/125s becomes ~8 seconds.
- GND (Graduated ND): Dark at the top, clear at the bottom. Balances a bright sky against a dark foreground. Does not extend total exposure time: not included in the calculation.
- CPL (Polariser): Reduces reflections on water, intensifies sky colour, increases contrast. Absorbs 1-2 stops (varies by brand and angle relative to the sun).

Cosa calcola
What it calculates
The sharp zone in front of and behind your focus point, and the optimal hyperfocal distance for your sensor, focal length and aperture.
Cos'è la distanza iperfocale
What is the hyperfocal distance
Metti a fuoco all'iperfocale e tutto da metà di quella distanza fino all'infinito sarà nitido.

🔬 Come interpretare la diffrazione 🔬 How to read Diffraction results ▼
Cos'è la diffrazione
What is diffraction
When the aperture is too small, light behaves like a wave and spreads instead of travelling straight. The result on the sensor is a small halo around each point: called the Airy disk. When this halo becomes larger than the pixels, the image loses sharpness. This is not a lens defect: it's a law of physics that cannot be avoided.
Perché dipende dalla fotocamera
Why it depends on your camera
A Sony A7R V has 3.76 µm pixels: very small. Diffraction becomes visible from f/5.6 onwards. A Canon R6 II has 6.00 µm pixels: larger. You can use f/11 with Strong-class diffraction that remains acceptable for normal viewing distances in print. Higher resolution sensors = more sensitive to diffraction.
Note: pixel pitch values are calculated from the sensor's physical dimensions and effective resolution as declared by the manufacturer. They may differ by 0.1-0.3 µm from other sources due to variations in official measurements. This does not affect the diffraction classifications.
Le 5 classi
The 5 classes
- Eccellente / ExcellentNessun limite. Nitidezza massima teorica. No limitation. Maximum theoretical sharpness.
- Buona / GoodInvisibile in stampa. Nessun impatto pratico.Invisible in print. No practical impact.
- Visibile / VisibleLieve calo del micro-contrasto. OK per uso normale, no crop intensivo.Slight micro-contrast reduction. OK for normal use, no heavy cropping.
- Forte / StrongLa diffrazione inizia a limitare la nitidezza pixel-level. Considera un diaframma più aperto.Diffraction is starting to limit pixel-level sharpness. Consider a wider aperture.
- Critica / CriticalDiffrazione elevata a livello teorico. Apri il diaframma o usa il Focus Stacking.High diffraction at theoretical level. Open the aperture or use Focus Stacking.
Consiglio: Su sensori oltre 45 MP (es. Sony A7R V), f/8 produce già diffrazione Forte (ratio 2.86×).
Tip: On sensors over 45 MP (e.g. Sony A7R V), f/8 already produces Strong diffraction (ratio 2.86×). Beyond f/8 things deteriorate rapidly: f/11 becomes Critical. More depth of field comes from Focus Stacking at f/8, not from stopping down further.

Il problema che risolve
The problem it solves
Closing the aperture increases depth of field but introduces diffraction. Opening it reduces diffraction but also reduces the sharp zone. Finding the balance point manually requires complex calculations. The Smart Advisor does this automatically: it scans all apertures from f/1 to f/64 and finds the one that covers your entire scene with minimum total blur.

Cos'è e quando serve
What it is and when you need it
Focus stacking merges multiple shots with different focus planes into a single fully sharp image. You need it when the scene has subjects both very close and very far, and no single aperture can cover the whole range without strong diffraction: typical in macro, close-up landscape, and interior architecture.
Le distanze sono in metri
Distances are in metres
Inserisci sempre le distanze in metri, usando il punto come separatore decimale:
Always enter distances in metres, using a dot as the decimal separator:
- 30 cm → 0.30
- 50 cm → 0.50
- 1 metro → 1.00
- 2 metri e mezzo → 2.50
- 30 cm → 0.30
- 50 cm → 0.50
- 1 metre → 1.00
- 2.5 metres → 2.50
L'overlap: cos'è e quale valore usare
Overlap: what it is and which value to use
Overlap is the percentage of the sharp zone shared between one frame and the next. Think of floor tiles: they overlap slightly to leave no gaps. At 25% (default) each frame covers a zone that overlaps 25% with the previous one: no gaps in the final composite. Increase to 35-40% for extreme macro.

- Camera on a tripod: mandatory

Cos'è un time-lapse
What is a time-lapse
A time-lapse is a series of photos taken at regular intervals that, played back as a video, compress time. A 90-minute sunrise becomes a 30-second clip. Each photo taken is one frame of the final video.
Le tre variabili
The three variables
The calculator handles three interconnected variables. Lock any two and calculate the third:
- Event duration — how long you will spend shooting in the field (e.g. 90 minutes for a sunrise).
- Interval — how many seconds between each shot. This is the value you set on your camera's intervalometer.
- Video duration — how long the final video will be (e.g. 30 seconds).
Come si usa sul campo
How to use it in the field
Calculate the interval before you go out. Then open your camera menu, find "Intervalometer" or "Interval shooting" and enter the value. The camera will shoot automatically for the entire duration without you having to touch it. Use manual mode (M) to prevent exposure changes between shots that would cause flickering in the final video.
Intervalli consigliati per soggetto
Recommended intervals by subject
Interval choice depends on subject speed. Too long an interval on fast subjects produces choppy video instead of smooth motion.

🌟 Come usare il calcolatore Stelle 🌟 How to use the Stars calculator ▼
A cosa serve
What it does
This module calculates the maximum exposure time to photograph stars as pinpoints of light, before they become trails. The Earth rotates and during a long exposure stars move across the sensor: beyond a certain time they appear as streaks instead of dots. The module tells you exactly that limit.
500 Rule vs NPF Rule: qual è la differenza?
500 Rule vs NPF Rule: what's the difference?
Il modulo fornisce due risultati affiancati.
The module shows two results side by side.
500 Rule — Classic quick formula: divide 500 by the full-frame equivalent focal length. E.g. 24mm on full frame = 500/24 = 20.8 seconds. Works well on older sensors with large pixels. On modern high-resolution sensors (40+ MP) it tends to give times that are too long, resulting in slightly trailed stars.
NPF Rule — Formula precisa sviluppata dall'astronomo e fotografo francese Frédéric Michaud.
NPF Rule — Precise formula developed by French astronomer and photographer Frédéric Michaud. It accounts for three factors: aperture, sensor pixel pitch and focal length. On a Sony A7R V with 24mm f/1.8, the 500 Rule says 20.8s but the NPF says 7.3s: a huge difference that determines pinpoint stars vs trailed stars at 100% crop.
Quale risultato usare?
Which result to use?
Use the NPF Rule if you selected your camera from the menu: it is more precise because it knows the exact pixel pitch of your sensor. Use the 500 Rule as a quick reference or if your camera is not in the database. If the calculated time is very short (under 8 seconds), the module warns you to use the widest aperture available and raise ISO to compensate for the reduced light gathered.
Cosa impostare in fotocamera
What to set on your camera
Metti a fuoco manualmente sull'infinito.
The calculated value is the shutter speed to set in manual mode (M). It is not a timer: you enter it directly as the shutter speed. Use the widest aperture available (f/1.8, f/2.0, f/2.8) to gather more light. Focus manually to infinity. Always shoot RAW to be able to correct white balance in post-production.
Note: this module calculates time for pinpoint stars without movement. If you want to intentionally photograph star trails, you need very long exposures (hours) or stacking many shots in post-production.

Cos'è l'EV (Exposure Value)?
What is EV (Exposure Value)?
EV is a number that describes how much light the camera collects with a given combination of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. A higher EV means more light in the scene or camera settings that gather more light. EV 15 corresponds to full midday sun. EV 0 is a scene in near total darkness. EV -6 is a scene lit only by starlight.

Come leggere la tabella delle esposizioni equivalenti
How to read the equivalent exposures table
The table shows all aperture and shutter speed combinations that produce the same brightness (same EV) at the ISO you entered. The highlighted row is your current setting. All other rows produce an equally exposed image but with different creative effects.
Passa a f/2.8.
Practical example: you have f/8, 1/125s, ISO 100 for a landscape scene. You want to switch to f/4 to reduce depth of field. The table immediately shows you need to use 1/500s to maintain the same exposure. Want to freeze motion with 1/1000s instead? Switch to f/2.8.
Stesso EV, effetti diversi
Same EV, different effects
Equivalent exposures produce the same final brightness but very different images. Opening the aperture (low f-number) reduces depth of field: the background becomes blurred. A longer shutter speed increases motion blur on water or clouds. Raising ISO introduces grain/digital noise. The module shows the options — the creative choice is yours.
📖 Glossario: cosa significano le sigle 📖 Glossary: what the terms mean ▼
Stop
The unit of light measurement in photography. Each stop doubles or halves the light. Adding 1 stop of ND filter doubles the exposure time. Closing the aperture by 1 stop halves the incoming light.
DoF / Depth of Field
Depth of Field. The zone of acceptable sharpness in front of and behind the focus point. A wide zone = everything sharp (landscape). A narrow zone = only the main subject sharp (portrait with blurred background).
CoC / Circle of Confusion
The maximum blur diameter that the eye still perceives as sharp. Depends on sensor size, resolution and viewing conditions. The fundamental parameter for depth of field calculations.
Pixel Pitch
The physical size of each sensor pixel, in µm (micrometres). Larger pixels tolerate smaller apertures before diffraction becomes visible. Sony A7R V: 3.76 µm. Canon R6 II: 6.00 µm. More pixels on the same sensor size = smaller pixels = more sensitive to diffraction.
Airy Disk
The circular diffraction pattern formed when light passes through the aperture. The smaller the aperture, the larger the Airy disk. When it exceeds the pixel size, the image loses sharpness.
At close distances the actual aperture is larger than the set f-number. Relevant in macro and detail photography. At normal landscape distances the difference is negligible.
Iperfocale / Hyperfocal Distance
Mettendo a fuoco all'iperfocale, tutto da metà di quella distanza all'orizzonte risulta nitido.
The minimum focus distance that brings the far limit to infinity. Focusing at the hyperfocal makes everything from half that distance to the horizon acceptably sharp.
Near / Far Limit
The boundaries of the sharp zone. Near limit = closest sharp distance. Far limit = farthest sharp distance. When the far limit reaches ∞ you have exceeded the hyperfocal distance.
DPI: Dots Per Inch
Measures the density of information on printed paper. 300 DPI is the Fine Art standard. The higher the number, the finer the print at the same size.
Overlap
In focus stacking: the percentage of the sharp zone shared between one frame and the next. Ensures no uncovered zones in the final composite. Default 25% for landscape, 35-40% for extreme macro.

* La percentuale indica quanta luce attraversa il filtro (100 ÷ fattore). I nomi commerciali da ND1000 in su derivano dalla densità ottica del filtro (ND1000 = 3.0, ND2000 = 3.3, ND4000 = 3.6, ND8000 = 3.9, ND32000 = 4.5): il fattore è 10 elevato alla densità, arrotondato al nome. Gli stop esatti sono quindi 9.97, 10.96, 11.96, 12.96 e 14.95, arrotondati per convenzione a 10, 11, 12, 13 e 15. · The percentage shows how much light passes through the filter (100 ÷ factor). Commercial names from ND1000 upward derive from the filter's optical density (ND1000 = 3.0, ND2000 = 3.3, ND4000 = 3.6, ND8000 = 3.9, ND32000 = 4.5): the factor is 10 to the power of the density, rounded to the name. Exact stops are therefore 9.97, 10.96, 11.96, 12.96 and 14.95, rounded by convention to 10, 11, 12, 13 and 15.
⚠ Osservare e fotografare il sole in sicurezza · Observing and photographing the sun safely
Il filtro va montato sempre davanti all'obiettivo, mai dietro o all'oculare, dove la luce è già concentrata.
Naked-eye viewing: only ISO 12312-2 certified solar viewers (the standard for direct solar observation, which also limits UV and infrared). Never sunglasses, smoked glass, film or photographic ND filters: most ND filters attenuate visible light but pass infrared, which can permanently damage the retina without any sensation of glare.
For photography: use dedicated solar filters, with a density of about 5.0 (~100,000× factor, 16-17 stops), designed to block UV and infrared as well. The filter must always be mounted in front of the lens, never behind it or at the eyepiece, where light is already concentrated. Compose and focus only via live view or an electronic viewfinder: never through the optical viewfinder of a DSLR. Extreme photographic ND filters (e.g. 15 stops) are not solar filters: at most they can protect the sensor for brief live-view shots, but they are never safe for the eyes. During an eclipse, keep the filter mounted throughout all partial phases.

FAQ – Filtri ND, Lunga Esposizione e Calcolo Tempi
Posso inserire tempi tipo 1/125 o 1/60?
Il polarizzatore CPL aggiunge tipicamente 1-2 stop all’esposizione, variando in base all’angolo rispetto al sole.
Come evitare mosso e dominanti nelle lunghe esposizioni?
FAQ – ND Filters, Long Exposure & Exposure Time Calculator
Can I enter shutter speeds like 1/125 or 1/60?
Yes. Enter it as a fraction (e.g., 1/125) or as a decimal (e.g., 0.5). The calculator handles both formats automatically, useful for short speeds and for long exposure photography with times of several minutes.
What’s the difference between ND64, ND1000 and “stops”?
Stops indicate how much light is reduced: each stop doubles the exposure time. Common references: ND64 = 6 stops (widely used for seascape long exposure in bright light), ND1000 = approximately 10 stops (the exact value is 9.97 stops: precisely 10 stops corresponds to ND1024, but manufacturers use ND1000 as a commercial convention).
What if I stack two ND filters?
Stops add up. For example, ND64 (6 stops) + ND8 (3 stops) becomes 9 total stops, time is multiplied by 2⁹. This calculator handles ND filter stacking directly, calculating the combined exposure in one step.
How much does a CPL polarizer affect long exposure time?
A CPL polarizer typically adds 1-2 stops depending on the scene and sun angle. When used together with an ND filter for seascape or waterfall photography, the combined effect can significantly change your final shutter speed. Enter an estimated value (e.g., 1.5) in the dedicated field to get the correct long exposure calculation with CPL.
How does the countdown timer work?
After calculating your exposure time, a countdown timer appears automatically set to the result. Press Start the moment you open the shutter in Bulb mode. When the timer ends, it plays an audio alert (can be disabled) and triggers a haptic vibration, useful even when your phone is on silent in the field.
What is night mode for?
Night mode switches the interface to deep red (620-700nm). Red light does not degrade rhodopsin and preserves dark adaptation during astrophotography or night photography sessions, the same technique used by professional astronomers.
Why can the real exposure time differ from the calculated one?
Some ND filters don’t perfectly match their stated stops, and light conditions can change during a shoot. Above ~30s you’ll need Bulb mode and a remote timer. Use the calculated time as your starting point and verify with a histogram check on location.
How to avoid blur and color casts in long exposure shots?
Use a solid tripod, disable optical stabilization when shooting on a tripod, trigger with a remote or 2s timer, and check for light leaks from the viewfinder. For color casts, common in long exposure photography, always shoot RAW and correct white balance in Lightroom or Camera Raw in post.
Does the timer work for exposures lasting hours?
Yes. The timer handles hours, minutes and seconds with no upper limit. The display shows HH:MM:SS format and the end alert also works with your phone in your pocket thanks to haptic vibration. Useful for long night exposures and astrophotography sessions in Bulb mode.
What is the hyperfocal distance and how do I use it in the field?
The hyperfocal distance is the focus distance beyond which everything is acceptably sharp to infinity. By focusing at the hyperfocal, the sharp zone extends from half that distance to infinity: the maximum achievable with a single frame. The DOF module calculates it for your camera, focal length and aperture, including a conservative version (+5%) to account for real-world lens mechanical tolerances.
When should I use focus stacking instead of stopping down?
Stopping down beyond f/11 on high-resolution sensors introduces diffraction that reduces real sharpness. When the foreground is very close and the background is at infinity, no single aperture covers the full scene without significant diffraction. Focus stacking solves both problems: shoot at the lens sweet spot (typically f/8) and blend 3-5 frames. The Smart Advisor module tells you automatically when focus stacking is needed.
How do I check whether my file is ready for Fine Art printing?
Use the Fine Art Print module: enter your camera’s megapixels and the desired print dimensions. The result shows the effective DPI and the maximum printable size at 300 DPI without interpolation. For reference: a Sony A7R V at 61 MP allows prints up to approximately 80×54 cm at 300 DPI; a Canon R6 II at 24 MP reaches about 51×34 cm. Below 200 DPI the calculator suggests AI upscaling before printing.
How do I calculate the interval for a sunrise time-lapse?
Use the Time-Lapse module: enter the sunrise duration (e.g. 90 minutes), the video length you want (e.g. 30 seconds) and the frame rate (25 fps). The calculator tells you how many shots you need and how many seconds apart to shoot. For sunrise the recommended range is 3-5 seconds interval. Set the calculated value on your camera’s intervalometer. Always shoot in manual mode to avoid flickering in the final video.
What is the maximum exposure time for stars without trails?
It depends on your focal length and sensor. Use the Stars module: select your camera, enter focal length and aperture and get two results. The 500 Rule is a quick estimate (e.g. 24mm on full frame = 20.8s), but on high-resolution sensors (40+ MP) it tends to give times that are too long. The NPF Rule is more precise because it accounts for the sensor pixel pitch: on the same camera it can give a significantly shorter time. For pinpoint stars sharp at 100% crop always use the NPF value.
If I change aperture while keeping the same exposure, what changes?
Use the Exposure Triangle module: enter your current settings and the calculator shows all equivalent combinations. Same brightness, different effects: opening the aperture (e.g. from f/8 to f/4) requires halving the shutter speed (e.g. from 1/125s to 1/500s) to maintain the same exposure, but reduces depth of field. Closing the aperture increases depth of field but requires longer times or higher ISO.
